It's a long time since I read it and I enjoyed it, but like you I didn't find it frightening more mildly disturbing (I don't have aphantasia). Recently I read the authorised sequel 'A Haunting on the Hill' by Elizabeth Hand which actually creeped me out more. I also recommend Shirley Jackson's short stories including 'The Lottery' for which she is justly famous.
i lovedddd the netflix miniseries adaption of this book! so interesting so see that the show differs so significantly from the source material. i’ve never read any gothic horror or horror ever really, but now i have to pick up this book!
I was wondering whether it was worth watching the series since I'd heard it differs so much, but I think I might have to give it a go! It can be good in a different way haha
This is one of my favorite books — thank you for reviewing it!
Ah great! I'm so glad I decided to read it

Ooh interesting. A Haunting on the Hill will have a lot to live up to, but I'll definitely check it out!
Great stuff, Lucy. There have also been a few film adaptions of this book. Some good, some, not so much.

It is masterful, but not as good as the film, which terrified me at 10. I still have a hard time watching it at 68
I definitely need to check out the film then!
I am crazy about Jackson and Hill House. The first paragraph of this book is my favorite book opening, ever.
It gripped me immediately. I love her writing style!
