I really didn’t like it (i have seen the original). I found it derivative, boring, and overdone. ‘Draculas’ droning slow voice made me want to hit something. I got up and had a wander round the cinema at one point I was so unenthralled. My adult kids who have never seen the original loved it.
I'll wait for it to come on mainstream TV . Like you Tasmin, having seen the original and the 70s remake with Klaus Kinski, I suspect I will also be underwhelmed.
Thank you, Lucy. I've been wondering whether I should go and see this. I have seen the 1922 film long time ago, and loved it. Your review makes me want to go.
Great essay! I love The Witch and appreciate The Lighthouse, though Nosferatu was definitely more about the visual style for me. While it's a story we all know quite well by now, Eggers and co. managed to bring something new to the table in terms of design and performance. Your reading into the sexual context really opened my eyes to the social commentary aspect that I admittedly overlooked in my own review.

Aw no haha, maybe I should watch the original and compare?

Let me know what you think if you do end up seeing it! There seem to be a lot of mixed reviews

Thanks Dylan! Definitely agree in terms of the design / performance angle, that was the selling point for me
